Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the REDELINGHUYS Fire Fighter Learnerships, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- No previous experience required
- Valid Code C1 driving licence
- Proficiency in at least two official Western Cape languages (Afrikaans, English or isiXhosa – speak, read and write)
- Must pass:
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
- Department Physical Test (on entry and annually)
- Medical test in line with NFPA 1582
- Must be physically and mentally fit
- No criminal record
- Willingness to work shifts, overtime, standby duties, and at any fire station within the municipal jurisdiction
- No phobias related to confined spaces, heights, water, darkness, isolation, blood, depths, or corpses
- Must reside within the Bergrivier Municipal Area (WC013)

Job Purpose
The Learner Fire Fighter will perform duties related to firefighting, emergency rescue services, basic medical care, fire prevention, and training activities. All duties will be carried out under supervision in line with the Fire Brigade Services Act (Act 99 of 1987), with the goal of protecting lives and property within the municipality.
Key Performance Areas
Successful candidates in the REDELINGHUYS Fire Fighter Learnerships will be responsible for:
- Participating in firefighting and emergency rescue operations under supervision
- Assisting with fire prevention and public education initiatives
- Preparing and maintaining firefighting equipment, vehicles, and protective gear
- Ensuring a safe, clean, and hygienic working environment at fire stations
- Performing basic administrative and record-keeping duties
- Taking part in the Municipality’s Performance Management and Development System
